The Mannum Rowing Club was founded as a result of a public meeting held at the Pretoria Hotel on 24th Feb.1910.David Shearer was elected Chairman and William Vivian Secretary.Committee members being messrs Arnold,Jeal,Gold,Leado,Eakins,Dr Verco.A tender for the construction of a boat shed from CJ Dodd of 240 pounds ten shillings and 5 pence was accepted. The shed contained a wooden floor that was used for roller skating which provided a good source of revenue together with a gymnasium that was used in conjuntion with the existing Athletics Club. The original shed still stands today although 4 extenstions have been added. This prompted the club to be called the Mannum Rowing and Athletic Club. The first regatta was held on 30th January 1911 and was supported by clubs from Mercantile,Torrens,Adelaide newly formed Murray Bridge and Mannum.Unfortunatley all events were won by the highly experienced Mercantile Club.Capt Arnold donated a Silver Cup to be contested in the ARNOLD 4s ( maiden Fours ) and more recently 3rd grade 4s over 1000m.This event The ARNOLD CUP has been contested for, every year with the exception of floods and the war years. The Regattas from then on were held on the Australia Day Long Weekend with Murray Bridge on Saturday and Mannum On the holiday Monday.Boats were transported by river either on or towed by paddle steamers from Murray Bridge to Mannum for the Regatta, then returned the same way and for some of the city clubs loaded on the train for the return trip to Adelaide. The Regattas were quite a carnival affair with side shows and differant entertainment.A silver service lunch was provided for members and officials in a large tent,These events were quite a big affair in those days with the inclusion of Athletic events as well.It is not documented when the Athletics ceased, maybe through the war years, however the club became known as the Mannum Rowing Club and then on the 20th September 1965 became Incorporated.Over the years the club has produced quite a number of crews/scullers both Men, Ladies and School crews who have represented the Town and State in Australian Titles.and have been quite successful. The Club has never been large in numbers but always seems to attract attention wherever they compete.
